Each piece keeps the warmth and character of its home tradition, while a stranger quietly stretches what is normal — creating a gentle, surprising tension beneath the music. They are misfits, and the misfit is the point. This is the heart of The Misfits, an ongoing series of these cross-cultural collisions. The music travels across eleven musical cultures — from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean, from Latin America to the high Andes — and each volume explores them through a different lens: the warm afternoon of the first collection; the smoky, after-midnight mood of the jazz-inflected After Hours; the lamplit streets of the Dixie volume, where a travelling New Orleans musician turns up where he doesn't belong; and more to come. The music is unhurried, atmospheric, and made to be lived alongside — grown-up listening for late afternoons and quiet evenings. There are no vocals to demand your attention; just warmth, character, and the quiet pleasure of hearing something familiar made gently strange. Jalanet is the work of Alan Robinson, a writer and musician from East Yorkshire, and the music is created with the help of AI — an honest collaboration between a human imagination and a remarkable new tool.
